The new 2. HBL season will open with the match between HC Motor, who have moved from the Ukrainian Superleague to the 2nd HBL due to the war, and TSV Bayer Dormagen. The match will take place on 31 August as part of the Pixum Super Cup 2022 at the PSD BANK DOME in Düsseldorf.

Two days later, TuSEM Essen will meet HC Empor Rostock and VfL Eintracht Hagen will host first division relegated team TuS N-Lübbecke. On Saturday, six more games will follow, among others the Eulen Ludwigshafen will welcome the second relegated team HBW Balingen-Weilstetten and Bob Hanning and promoted Potsdam will meet SG BBM Bietigheim. The first matchday will be concluded with two matches on 4 September.

Some matches during the rest of the season can only be scheduled at a later date due to currently still open hall capacities or pending European Cup schedules of HC Motor Zaporizhzhia. The 38th and last matchday is scheduled for 7 June 2023. This season, media partner Sportdeutschland.TV will again show all matches of the 2nd Handball Bundesliga in a free-to-air livestream.
