Matchday 23: SG Flensburg-Handewitt are hunting foxes

After the Füchse Berlin became sole leaders of the table, the next top game awaits on Sunday against third-placed SG Flensburg-Handewitt. The Rhein-Neckar Löwen want to end their negative streak at bottom team HBW Balingen-Weilstetten on the 23rd matchday of the LIQUI MOLY HBL, just like the Handball Sport Verein Hamburg at home against FRISCH AUF! Göppingen. The NRW derby in Lipperland is also on the program.

Thursday, 22 February:  

TVB Stuttgart vs MT Melsungen (19:00 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)    

  • The TVB showed a strong performance in the 36:39 defeat in the goal festival last match day against THW Kiel and scored more goals than in any previous game of the season. 
  • With 16:28 points, Stuttgart are currently in 13th place, but are only three points ahead of a relegation zone. TVB scored twelve of their 16 points at home. 
  • MT Melsungen, which won the first leg 35:27, are currently fifth in the table and have won three of the last four games, most recently with 31:26 against Bergischer HC. 
  • MT had won both games against Stuttgart in the previous season, in the overall balance there are nine Melsungen victories compared to seven Stuttgart wins, and there was a draw once. 
  • With 116 goals, Stuttgart's Kai Häfner is still the best German scorer in the LIQUI MOLY HBL, ahead of Marcel Schiller (Göppingen) and Melsunger Timo Kastening (110). 

Friday, 23 February:  

TBV Lemgo Lippe vs VfL Gummersbach (20:00 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)    

  • TBV Lemgo Lippe are currently in twelfth place with 17:27 points and lost 26:30 against league leaders Füchse Berlin on the last matchday. 
  • With the 30:29 win against SC DHfK Leipzig at the final whistle on Monday, VfL Gummersbach consolidated seventh place in the table and has a positive account again with 22:20 points. 
  • From the last five games, Gummersbach got three wins and Lemgo got three points (one win, one draw). 
  • The Gummersbach team won the first leg 30:27, but after 73 duels between the two NRW clubs, the balance is 35:31 in favor of TBV, with both teams drawing seven times. 
  • The best Lemgo scorer is Samuel Zehnder with 112 goals, while Milöos Vujovic (95) scored most often for Gummersbach.

Saturday, 24 February:  

HC Erlangen vs HSG Wetzlar (19:00 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)    

  • With 4:2 points from the last three games - most recently 30:28 against Hamburg - HC Erlangen have now improved to eleventh place in the table with 17:25 points. 
  • HSG Wetzlar's path is going downwards after the two defeats against Stuttgart and most recently the 16:21 goal drought against bottom team Balingen-Weilstetten - HSG are currently ninth with a two point lead over Erlangen. 
  • HCE won the first leg in Wetzlar with 31:26 and has thus equalized the overall record against the HSG with seven wins each (with two draws). However, Erlangen won the last four games. 
  • With 126 strikes, Wetzlar's Slovenian Domen Novak is currently the seventh best scorer in the LIQUI MOLY HBL. 

Bergischer HC vs TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (19:00 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)    

  • Bergische HC have lost the last five HBL games, the last win, a 33:28 against Stuttgart, dated 10 December. With 13:29 points, BHC are third from bottom, tied with Eisenach in the first relegation spot. 
  • The warriors from Hannover-Burgdorf ended SC Magdeburg's series last matchday after 17 unbeaten league games in a row with a 28:27 home win. With 23:19 points, TSV is in sixth place. 
  • Ten goals to the surprise win against Magdeburg were contributed by Hanover's most successful scorer, Marius Steinhauser, who now has 87 goals on his tally. 
  • The warriors had clearly won the first leg with 37:28, are just ahead in the overall record with 10:9 victories and had also won the previous season with 23:22 at the BHC. 

HBW Balingen-Weilstetten vs Rhein-Neckar Löwen (20:30 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)    

  • Rhein-Neckar Löwen have lost their last five league games and won the last point on 9 December with a 34:34 against Lemgo. Now on 18:24 points, the Baden team has slipped to tenth place in the table. 
  • Things are looking up for newly promoted HBW Balingen-Weilstetten: With two wins against Göppingen and Wetzlar, the bottom team (11:31 points) has reduced the gap to the penultimate team from Eisenach to two points. 
  • HBW goalkeeper Mohamed El-Tayar was not only outstanding in the 21:16 against Wetzlar, he is currently the second strongest goalkeeper in the league and saved 57.1 percent of all shots against Wetzlar. He also saved the most seven meters together with Berlin goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev (14). 
  • The Lions won the first leg 25:21, it was the 25th win in the 27th duel against Jens Bürkle's team.

Sunday, 25 February:  

SG Flensburg-Handewitt vs Füchse Berlin (15:00 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)  

  • In Flensburg the best home team (22:0 points) lock horns the best away team (17:3). 
  • After the 30:26 against Lemgo and the Magdeburg defeat in Hanover, Füchse Berlin are the sole leaders of the table for the first time since weeks with 38:4 points. 
  • Since their last defeat (26:30 in Kiel on 19 November), Füchse have only given one point in nine games (against Göppingen) from their hands and have won eight, including the 32:31 in the first leg against SG two weeks ago. 
  • With the exception of the defeat in Berlin, SG Flensburg-Handewitt had four wins in the last five games, but are already six points behind the league leaders in third place with 32:10 points. 
  • The Foxes last won in Flensburg in 2021, the overall balance clearly speaks for the SG with 25:7 wins and six draws. 
  • With ten goals against Lemgo, Füchse player Mathias Gidsel increased his goal tally to a total of 163 goals this season - all of them field goals. 
  • The SG's best scorer is also a Dane: Emil Jakobsen with 122 strikes, but he is 24 goals below his compatriot Lasse Andersson, who is the second best Füchse scorer. 
  • Both teams have qualified for the REWE Final4, but will avoid each other in the semi-finals (Füchse against Magdeburg and Flensburg against Melsungen). 

Handball Sport Club Hamburg vs FRISCH AUF! Göppingen (16:30 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV)   

  • The Handball Sport Club Hamburg has been waiting for a win since 17 November and the 31:23 against HC Erlangen. The balance since then: two draws and six defeats, most recently 28:30 in the second leg in Erlangen. 
  • With 9:11 points, Hamburg is the second weakest home team in the league and is in 15th place with 14:28 points in the table, just one point ahead of a relegation zone. 
  • FRISCH AUF! Göppingen ended their series of three games without a win by beating Eisenach 35:31 on the last matchday and are currently eighth with 19:25 points. 
  • Göppingen have only won three of 15 away games in Hamburg, most recently in 2015. HSVH have won 20 of 31 HBL duels so far, including the first leg in Göppingen 32:27, lost eight times, three games ended in a draw. 
  • Hamburg's Danish winger Casper Mortensen has scored 149 times so far, making him the third best thrower in the league. With ten goals, Göppingen wing Marcel Schiller (together with Mathias Gidsel/Berlin and Marius Steinhauser/Hannover) was one of the three most successful scorers on the last matchday. 

THW Kiel vs ThSV Eisenach (16:30 CET, live on Dyn and worldwide on HBL TV) 

  • The record champions host the newly promoted team – and Eisenach are waiting for their next win against THW for over 23 years. Including the 40:32 win in the first leg, Kiel have won 17 of the 19 duels against ThSV. 
  • THW have won nine of the last ten HBL games, only losing against Magdeburg 26:33, but being fourth they are already eight points below leaders Füchse Berlin. 
  • After the European Championship break, Eisenach lost all three games (against Göppingen, Gummersbach and Wetzlar), but previously caused a stir with two wins against Erlangen and the Rhein-Neckar Löwen. With 13:31 points, the promoted team is second to last in a relegation zone. 
  • With a 14-goal lead over Mathias Gidsel, Eisenach's Manuel Zehnder is on top the HBL scorer list; the Swiss has scored 177 times so far, including 54 times from seven meters. 
  • Niclas Ekberg (THW Kiel) is five goals short of his 100th goal of the season.
