German Cup: Penultimate stop on the way to the REWE Final4
16 teams, one dream: The German Cup continues with the round of 16 on Tuesday and Wednesday - and two wins only separate the teams from a starting place at the REWE Final4 in the LANXESS arena in Cologne on the 13th/14th. April 2024. Twelve first division teams and four second division teams face each other in the eight round of 16 duels.
And thanks to women’s handball national goalkeeper Dinah Eckerle, who drew the lots in Eisenach in October, at least one second division team will advance to the quarter-finals - because in the match VfL Eintracht Hagen vs. TuS N-Lübbecke there is a NRW duel from the 2nd HBL.
For the first time this season, the three top placed sides of the REWE Final4 2023 are challenged in the cup, who had a bye in the last round: Cup winners Rhein-Neckar Löwen travel to second division team TuSEM Essen. Finalist SC Magdeburg have a home game against HSG Wetzlar, who caused a mega sensation in the third round when they defeated record cup winners THW Kiel in their hall 32:31. Third-placed SG Flensburg-Handewitt also has a home game against Bergischer HC.
The fourth remaining second division team SG BBM Bietigheim, who eliminated the warriors from Hannover-Burgdorf in round 3, will face Füchse Berlin. In other first division duels, Handball Sport Verein Hamburg lock horn with ThSV Eisenach, SC DHfK Leipzig host MT Melsungen and VfL Gummersbach play against Frisch Auf Göppingen, who defeated this year's semi-finalists TBV Lemgo in round 3 and on Sunday 29:29 came at league leaders Füchse Berlin.
In addition to Hannover-Burgdorf, Kiel and Lemgo, the first division clubs HC Erlangen, TVB Stuttgart and HBW Balingen-Weilstetten had already failed in the third round. All round of 16 games will be shown live by media partner Dyn. The quarter-finals in the German Cup will take place on 3/4. February 2024.
