Matchday 3: Duels in the north and between Europe's heroes: two top games in two days

The third matchday of the LIQUI MOLY HBL with eight games is scheduled between Tuesday and Thursday, before round four continues on Saturday. The focus is on the duels between European League winners Füchse Berlin and Champions League winners SC Magdeburg, who still have a clean sheet after two games, as does THW Kiel before the northern derby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt, MT Melsungen, who competes in Hamburg, and the Recken from Hanover who travel to Gummersbach. In addition, there will be the next Schwabenderby in Balingen, and in Erlangen (against the BHC) two teams without points will face.

Tuesday, 5 September:

HBW Balingen-Weilstetten vs TVB Stuttgart (19:00 CEST., live on Dyn)

  • HBW Balingen-Weilstetten goes into their second home game with the confidence of the 28:27 away win at Bergisches HC. The “Gauls from the Alb” had turned a 16:21 deficit into a 24:22 lead.
  • After their return to HBL, Balingen lost the first home game against THW Kiel by 25:36.
  • TVB Stuttgart have only played one game by now – and were on the verge of a sensation when they lost 29:30 at home to European League winners Füchse Berlin.
  • German international Kai Häfner contributed four goals for TVB in his new club's first Bundesliga game.
  • After two games, Leo Brantner is the best HBW striker with eight goals, while Daniel Fernandez scored seven for TVB against the Füchse.
  • In the last seven games against Stuttgart, Balingen has only managed one draw and six defeats, the last HBW win dates back to 2016 (21:16).

Wednesday, 6 September:

HC Erlangen vs Bergischer HC (19:00 CEST., live on Dyn)

  • Two teams without points meet in Franconia: under new coach Hartmut Mayerhoffer HCE lost 25:27 against the Recken and on Sunday 27:28 at TBV Lemgo.
  • In Lemgo, Erlangen were absolutely equal, conceded the last goal only nine seconds before the end and failed with their last attack against TBV goalkeeper Urh Kastelic.
  • The fact that Bergischer HC still hasn't got a point after two match days is more surprising, because Jamal Naji's team met both promoted teams at the start - but lost highly close 30:31 at ThSV Eisenach and 27:28 at home against HBW Balingen-Weilstetten, when the Lions gave up a clear lead.
  • With 16 goals – ten of them against Balingen – Mads Kjeldgaard Andersen is BHC's top scorer and currently fifth in the top scorers list
  • From 22 games so far – including eight in the second HBL – Erlangen have won 13, BHC has been successful seven times, in the previous season all points in these comparisons went to the HCE.

VfL Gummersbach vs TSV Hannover-Burgdorf (19:00 CEST, live on Dyn)

  • After the 30:27 win against TBV Lemgo Lippe, VfL Gummersbach had no chance in the second round when getting defeated 30:41 by record champions THW Kiel 30:41.
  • The warriors (Recken) have won their two previous games in the LIQUI MOLY HBL (27:25 against Erlangen and 31:30 against Eisenach) and come to Gummersbach with a clean slate.
  • Hanover also qualified for the group stage of the European League with two clear wins (33:28, 30:21) against the Swedes from Ystad.
  • With 16 goals in two games, Marius Steinhauser is currently the best scorer for TSV, while Elldi Vidarsson has struck ten times for VfL.
  • Hannover-Burgdorf have won their last six games against VfL, including both after Gummersbach's promotion last season (34-27 away, 28-27 home). In the overall balance there are twelve Recken victories, seven for Gummersbach and five draws.

ThSV Eisenach vs. Frisch Auf Göppingen (19:00 CEST, live on Dyn)

  • Newly promoted side ThSV Eisenach is the surprise team of the current season: After the 31:30 win against Bergischer HC, coach Misha Kaufmann's team lost unluckily 30:31 at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf.
  • Frisch Auf Göppingen recovered well on Matchday 2 from the 19:29 defeat at MT Melsungen and defied cup winners Rhein-Neckar Löwen by a point at 27:27.
  • Markus Baur's team showed morale and scored four goals in a row after the 23:26 before conceding an equalizer seconds before the end.
  • With 18 goals (including 13 field goals), Eisenach's Swiss Manuel Zehnder is currently the second-best scorer of the LIQUI MOLY HBL, David Schmidt is the best from Göppingen with ten goals.
  • Eisenach has won just one of twelve matches so far (25:23 in April 2014), Göppingen has won eight times and three games have ended in a draw.

Füchse Berlin vs SC Magdeburg (20:30 CEST, live on Bild.TV and Dyn)

  • Both co-favourites still have a clean record, for SC Magdeburg it is the second top game in a row.
  • Both clubs won international titles in the 2022/23 season: SC Magdeburg won the Champions League and club world championship, Füchse won the European League.
  • After the clear 31:15 at HSG Wetzlar, SCM beat SG Flensburg-Handewitt 31:29 on Sunday thanks to an outstanding goalkeeping performance by Nikola Portner and six goals each from Omar Ingi Magnusson and Michael Damgaard.
  • The Berlin side have won both of their away games, both narrowly: 31:29 at SC DHfK Leipzig and 30:29 at TVB Stuttgart. Like Portner, Dejan Milosavljev was Berlin's backbone on Matchday 2, with 17 saves.
  • Three Danes are currently the top scorers at both clubs: Mathias Gidsel has struck 16 times, while his Berlin team-mate Lasse Andersson, like Damgaard, has 13 goals on his tally.
  • Both teams are without regular playmakers due to long-term injuries: Paul Drux (Berlin) is ruled-out with a torn Achilles tendon and Gisli Kristjansson (Magdeburg) after a shoulder surgery.
  • SCM have won the last seven games against Berlin, including both duels in the previous season and the European League final in 2021. In the overall balance, however, there are 19 Berlin wins, SCM has won 14 times.

Thursday, 7 September:

MT Melsungen vs Handball Sport Verein Hamburg (19:00 CEST, live on Dyn)

  • MT Melsungen got off to a dream start: After the 29:19 against Frisch Auf Göppingen, they also won their second home game, beating SC DHfK Leipzig 28:27.
  • New signing Dainis Kristopans from Paris, who scored ten times against Leipzig, played a large part in the 4-0 points – but the best MT scorer is Timo Kastening, who netted 13 goals in total, one more than the Latvian.
  • Hamburg have only played one game so far – and lost it 32:37 at SG Flensburg-Handewitt.
  • Best HSV scorer in this game was Casper Mortensen (last season's HBL top scorer) with seven goals.
  • Although Melsungen have won two of their last three duels against HSVH, Roberto Garcia Parrondo's side have won just four and lost 19 overall.

HSG Wetzlar vs TBV Lemgo Lippe (19:00 CEST, live on Dyn)

  • HSG Wetzlar started the season with two clear defeats – however against the current Champions League winners SC Magdeburg (15:31) and at the reigning German champions THW Kiel (22:33).
  • As against Magdeburg, Wetzlar had problems in attack in Kiel, as THW goalkeeper Tomas Mrkva saved 60 percent of HSG shots. So it's not surprising that Lenny Rubin (nine goals) is the only HSG pitcher among the top 30 in the league.
  • TBV Lemgo travels to Wetzlar with 2 points – the 27:30 defeat in Gummersbach was followed by a hard-fought 28:27 home win against Erlangen on Sunday.
  • TBV match winners were Samuel Zehnder with eleven goals (15 in total), including nine penalty throws and the winning goal shortly before the end, as well as the strong goalkeeper Urh Kastelic.
  • Although Wetzlar won the last game against Lemgo in the previous season 26:24, TBV has a total of 38 wins and nine for HSG.

SG Flensburg-Handewitt vs THW Kiel (20:30 CEST live on Dyn)

  • After beating HSV Hamburg (37:32) at the start, SG Flensburg.-Handewitt lost the first top game of the season on Sunday by 29:31 at SC Magdeburg.
  • Meanwhile, THW has won all four competitive games – the victory in the Pixum Super Cup against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen was followed by league victories in Balingen (36:25), against Gummersbach 41:30) and Wetzlar (33:22), all of them with a double-digit advance.
  • In the previous season, SG achieved the highest derby win of all time with 36:23, in the second leg in Kiel THW turned the tide by a 29:19, it was Maik Machulla's last game as SG coach.
  • THW has won 65 times and Flensburg 38 times in a total of 108 regional derbies (including three finals in the Champions League and several DHB Cup finals).
  • Whilst SG can field the full squad – strengthened by the likes of Simon Pytlick, Kay Smits and Blaz Blagotinsek – Kiel are still without ex-Flensburg player Steffen Weinhold, Hendrik Pekeler and new signing Vincent Gerard, who are all injured.
  • Swede Eric Johansson (THW) is HBL's top scorer with 19 goals after three games, while Kay Smits has scored 15 for SG.
