Current German Champion: THW Kiel

The list of German Handball Bundesliga champions is huge! After season 2022/23 THW Kiel is the record champion with 23 championship titles. Before 1966, the German Championship was held in finals between the various regional league champions and runners-up. From 1966, the Handball Bundesliga was introduced as the highest division. Initially, it was played in two seasons (North and South). The season champions played out the title in first and second legs until 1974. From 1975 to 1977, the championship was played out in semifinals and finals between the first- and second-place teams of the two seasons. In 1977, the single-league Bundesliga was introduced. Since then, the first-placed team is automatically the German Champion. The years 1990 to 1992 were an exception, when the former DDR-Oberliga was integrated into the Bundesliga and played in two divisions. The champion was played out in a playoff round with the top eight teams.

*The 2019/20 season was cancelled due to Corona restrictions and THW Kiel was declared champion on the basis of the quotient rule. **In 1948 and 1949, a German indoor handball champion was played by the German Working Committee for Handball (DAH). These two titles are considered unofficial today.
