The youth certificate
The youth certificate was inaugurated in 2007 as a hallmark of excellence for youth setups and awarded to professional clubs for the first time in 2008. It honours clubs who provide good conditions for their up and coming stars. The LIQUI MOLY HBL awards it to clubs who take on the youngsters and provide them with the perfect environment in order to develop them into top players.
The criteria include provisions for the support and education of the player with a dual career in mind, the quality of the coaching staff and training and the performances of the team on the court. The awarding committee is made up of the following people: Professor Dr. Klaus Cachay (University of Bielefeld), Klaus Langhoff (coached East Germany to Olympic Gold in 1980) and Holger Kaiser (managing director of the Handball Bundesliga GmbH).
The aim of the youth certificate is to ensure the continuation of the promotion and development of young talent within the professional clubs. This would allow the most promising young German talent to have the best possible chance of reaching their potential at their current clubs. The clubs unanimously decided to create the award in 2007. Clubs who don’t receive the award are obliged to contribute to a fund, which will be used to help promote the sport’s youth work. Examples of where the money could be spent include organising coaching conferences, seminars, site-specific training courses as well the nation’s largest youth tournament – the “Rookie Cup” – which was held in Berlin for the fifth time in 2014.
