RESTART SUCCESSFUL: ZEBRAS SECURE PIXUM SUPER CUP 2020
Record champion THW Kiel showed its archrival SG Flensburg-Handewitt the limits at the start of the national handball season. The "Corona champions" around their new superstar Sander Sagosen won the Supercup duel 28:24 (14:13) and thus celebrated their tenth triumph in the competition.
After the month-long forced break at Corona, Kiel's Sagosen and Niclas Ekberg were the best scorers in Düsseldorf with seven goals each, where only 2,100 spectators watched the close, but only partly high-class match. According to the admission, 2640 fans would have been allowed to watch the match in the ISS Dome.
After the "embarrassment" in the Champions League against HBC Nantes (27:35), Kiel's coach Filip Jicha admitted to Sky after the final whistle, "we were a little ashamed". The former world handball player saw a game with "many mistakes, but also great willingness. That was fun."
Mark Machulla was also satisfied - despite the defeat. "It was very positive that we were able to present ourselves in front of spectators again," said the Flensburg coach: "We did very well for 45 minutes today. Overall, it was a performance that gives me courage."
Champions Kiel got off to a slightly better start. Superstar Sagosen set up Kiel's first lead and completed the scoring himself to make it 2:1. In the following, THW usually went ahead, leading by two goals for the first time at 5:3 (8th). However, it remained an even match.
The Pixum Super Cup: A complete success
From 2018 to 2020, the Pixum Super Cup will be held in the ISS DOME in Düsseldorf, which has a capacity of over 10,000 spectators. The event premiere, which took place on August 22, 2018, was a great success thanks to the cooperation with the sports city of Düsseldorf.
The Super Cup has been a firm fixture in LIQUI MOLY HBL's calendar since 1994. THW Kiel and SG Wallau-Massenheim competed against each other for the debut of the competition. The Super Cup turned out to be a complete success, thrilling the public and bringing handball back into the limelight at the start of the season. Surprise winner of the premiere was SG Wallau-Massenheim, but the opponent from Kiel is still the undisputed record winner. With 20 participations, the Zebras could already lift the cup ten times.
